Navigating Conflict and Controversy: Insights from OG Yang Gang member Erez on Gaza, U.S. Politics, and Immigration
A Deep Dive into Current Affairs with OG Yang Gang Member Erez L on the Nerds for Humanity Podcast
Hello, Nerds! Welcome back to Nerds for Humanity. I’m your host, Tom Leung, and recently we had a special episode with Erez, an OG member of our community. Erez and I go way back to the early days of the Yang campaign in 2019, and it’s always a pleasure having him on the show. Our conversation spanned a range of topics, including the ongoing conflict in Gaza, U.S. politics, and immigration. Let’s dive into the highlights of our discussion.
The War in Gaza: On the Ground Realities and Global Implications
Erez recently returned from Israel, providing us with a firsthand account of the situation there. He shared, “In Tel Aviv, life feels almost normal, but reminders of the war are everywhere with posters of hostages. The uncertainty about the future and potential larger conflicts with Hezbollah are never far from people’s minds.”
We discussed the continuous missile attacks from Gaza, which Erez confirmed still occur, albeit less frequently. He emphasized the complexity of the Israeli response to the October 7th attacks and the broader political dynamics at play. “The polarization in Israel mirrors the U.S. in many ways. People are divided, not necessarily on their support for Netanyahu, but on the fear of what the other side represents.”
Erez highlighted a significant point about the coalition politics in Israel, explaining how Netanyahu’s alignment with ultra-orthodox and far-right elements has shaped the current government’s stance. This polarization has forced many Israelis to choose what they see as the lesser evil, much like the political landscape in the U.S.
Senator Schumer’s Critique and the International Perception of Israel
We touched on Senator Schumer’s remarks, where he criticized Netanyahu’s approach. I shared my view that Schumer, perhaps uniquely positioned due to his heritage and standing, could openly criticize Netanyahu without being misconstrued as anti-Semitic. Erez agreed that while criticism is necessary, the call for Israelis to hold elections was overstepping, likening it to interference in another democracy’s internal affairs.
Our conversation delved into the broader implications of Israel’s military strategy in Gaza. I questioned, “How much more can be achieved with continuous bombing, especially when it results in significant civilian casualties?” Erez acknowledged the moral and strategic dilemmas, stressing that the goal is not indiscriminate bombing but targeted strikes against Hamas. However, the entrenched nature of Hamas within civilian populations makes this incredibly challenging.
The Humanitarian Toll and the Quest for an Alternative
The heavy toll on civilians was a recurring theme. Erez expressed his internal conflict, sharing, “107 changed something in me. I used to believe we could coexist peacefully, but now it feels like an existential fight.” This sentiment underscores the profound impact of the conflict on both personal and national levels.
We explored potential alternatives to the current military strategy, such as negotiated pauses in bombing in exchange for hostage releases. Erez pointed out the complexities, especially regarding prisoners with blood on their hands. He recounted the Gilad Shalit exchange, where Israel released a thousand prisoners for one soldier, highlighting the contentious nature of such decisions.
The Broader Impact on Future Generations
One of the most poignant points Erez made was about the long-term impact of the conflict on future generations. “The way civilian casualties are piling up risks creating a whole new generation of kids who really have a lot of anger towards Israel,” he noted. This cycle of violence and retribution is a significant concern for both Israelis and Palestinians.
Shifting to Domestic Issues: Immigration and U.S. Politics
Transitioning from international to domestic issues, we discussed the immigration crisis in the U.S., particularly the situation in Chicago. The city is struggling with ER visits, school capacity, and health epidemics due to an influx of migrants. Erez lamented the lack of incentives for both parties to solve the immigration issue, despite it being a matter of common sense. “Neither party historically had an incentive to solve it; the issues were easier to keep open for campaigning,” he observed.
I shared my frustration with the extreme positions on immigration, from Trump’s hardline stance to the far-left’s open borders. Erez agreed, advocating for a balanced approach that manages immigration through legal channels while providing opportunities for those seeking a better life.
The TikTok Debate: Privacy, Influence, and Ownership
Our final topic was the ongoing debate around TikTok, especially the potential sale to U.S. interests. Erez voiced his concern about the CCP’s influence on TikTok’s algorithm, more so than the data privacy issues. “I’m worried about their ability to influence what so many people, especially young impressionable people, are seeing,” he said. This echoed broader concerns about foreign influence on social media platforms and the need for regulatory oversight.
We both acknowledged the complexity of finding a suitable buyer for TikTok within a short timeframe and the broader implications of foreign ownership of media platforms. Erez concluded, “For certain types of things, foreign ownership is okay, but the ability of an adversary to influence our perceptions and thoughts is a line we need to be wary of.”
Reflecting on Leadership and the Future
As we wrapped up, I asked Erez who he supports for president. While he couldn’t see himself voting for Trump, he expressed cautious optimism about Biden’s leadership, despite the challenges ahead. This sentiment reflects a broader uncertainty among voters as we approach the next election.
In conclusion, our conversation highlighted the complexities of current global and domestic issues, from the enduring conflict in Gaza to the nuanced challenges of immigration and the digital age. Erez’s insights provided a valuable perspective, emphasizing the need for thoughtful, balanced approaches in addressing these multifaceted problems.

Final Thoughts and Reflections
Immigration remains a contentious issue. I advocate for controlled, legal immigration processes that balance humanitarian needs with practical resource management. This approach ensures a sustainable and inclusive future for all.
On Israel and Gaza, I firmly believe in Israel’s right to defend itself but stress the importance of minimizing civilian casualties. Supporting humanitarian efforts and seeking diplomatic solutions is crucial for lasting peace.
Regarding the upcoming elections, while skepticism towards Trump persists, Biden's leadership, though not perfect, provides stability. The importance of voting and civic engagement cannot be overstated in shaping our nation's future.
